# API Explorer

> Open the in-app GraphiQL explorer built into Arize AX to browse the live GraphQL schema, autocomplete fields, and run queries or mutations as yourself.

The API explorer is a GraphiQL interface built into the Arize AX app. It runs against the same `/graphql` endpoint you'd call from a script, using your logged-in session, so it exposes exactly the schema this reference documents.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Arize app">
    Sign in at [app.arize.com](https://app.arize.com). Developer access is required; see [Getting started](/docs/ax/graphql-reference/overview/getting-started-with-graphql) for how access is granted.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click APIs in the left navigation footer">
    Click the **APIs** icon (the `<>` code icon) at the bottom of the left navigation. This opens `https://app.arize.com/api/docs`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select the GraphQL tab">
    The API docs page opens with a REST tab by default. Select the **GraphQL** tab to load the explorer.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What you can do in the explorer

* **Browse the schema.** The Docs sidebar on the right lists every type, field, and argument in the live schema.
* **Autocomplete as you type.** The editor suggests valid fields, arguments, and enum values as you write a query or mutation.
* **Run queries and mutations as yourself.** Calls execute with your logged-in session, under your own roles and permissions, exactly like a request made with your API key.
* **Copy a working operation into your script.** Once a query or mutation runs successfully in the explorer, copy it into cURL or your client library; see [Forming calls](/docs/ax/graphql-reference/overview/how-to-use-graphql/forming-calls).

<Warning>
  Mutations run in the explorer hit real data. There is no sandbox or dry-run mode: a `deleteMonitor` or `deleteData` mutation you run in the explorer executes against your actual space, the same as it would from a script.
</Warning>

### Shortcuts

| Shortcut | Action |
| - | - |
| Cmd/Ctrl-click a field | Open its docs |
| Ctrl-Space | Autocomplete |
| Cmd/Ctrl-Enter | Run the query |
| Shift-Cmd/Ctrl-P | Prettify the query |

## Introspection

GraphQL schemas are introspective: you can query the schema itself for every type, field, and argument it defines. Both queries below run in the explorer with no arguments needed.

### List every mutation

```graphql ListAllMutations theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light-default","dark":"github-dark-default"}}
query ListAllMutations {
  __schema {
    mutationType {
      fields {
        name
        description
      }
    }
  }
}
```

### Describe one input type

Replace the type name with any input, object, or enum type you want to inspect. This example describes the input for `createDriftMonitor`:

```graphql DescribeCreateDriftMonitorInput theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light-default","dark":"github-dark-default"}}
query DescribeCreateDriftMonitorInput {
  __type(name: "CreateDriftMonitorMutationInput") {
    inputFields {
      name
      type {
        name
        kind
        ofType {
          name
        }
      }
      description
    }
  }
}
```
