# Agent Skills

> Skills that help AI coding agents install, validate, and troubleshoot Arize AX self-hosted.

## What skills are

Agent Skills are packaged instructions and scripts that an AI coding agent loads when a task calls for them. The [Arize AX self-hosted skills](https://github.com/Arize-ai/ax-self-hosted-skills) give your agent the steps and guarded commands for installing and operating a self-hosted cluster. The agent confirms with you before it changes anything in your cluster.

They follow the open [Agent Skills format](https://agentskills.io), so they work with Claude Code and other agents that support it, including Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf.

> [!NOTE]
>
> These skills are for operating a self-hosted install. For skills that run Arize AX workflows such as tracing, datasets, and experiments, see [Arize Skills](/docs/ax/skills/overview.md).

## Install the skills

Give your coding agent this prompt:

```
Install Arize self-hosted skills from https://github.com/Arize-ai/ax-self-hosted-skills
```

Or install them yourself:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light-default","dark":"github-dark-default"}}
npx skills add Arize-ai/ax-self-hosted-skills
```

The installer detects your agent and lets you choose which skills to add. For the git clone installer, prerequisites, and environment variables, see the [repository README](https://github.com/Arize-ai/ax-self-hosted-skills#readme).

## Available skills

| Skill | What it does | When to use it |
| - | - | - |
| [**arize-self-hosted-install**](https://github.com/Arize-ai/ax-self-hosted-skills/tree/main/skills/arize-self-hosted-install) | Guides a first-time install: choosing the distribution, preparing `values.yaml`, running `arize.sh`, and validating the cluster. It does not provision infrastructure. | Starting a new installation |
| **arize-alerts-troubleshoot** | Diagnoses a self-hosted cluster with read-only kubectl, Prometheus, and Alertmanager access, and finds the docs for each firing alert | Alerts are firing, or you are investigating cluster health |

## Running a skill with Claude Code

Once a skill is installed, run it as a slash command inside Claude Code, or start Claude Code with the skill directly from your terminal.

### Install Arize AX

From your terminal, in the directory where you unpacked the Arize AX distribution archive:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light-default","dark":"github-dark-default"}}
claude "/arize-self-hosted-install"
```

Or, inside an open Claude Code session:

```
/arize-self-hosted-install
```

### Troubleshoot firing alerts

From your terminal, with kubectl pointed at the cluster running Arize AX and `ARIZE_DISTRIBUTION_ROOT` set to the unpacked distribution for your release:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light-default","dark":"github-dark-default"}}
claude "/arize-alerts-troubleshoot"
```

You can describe the problem when you start the skill to give your agent a head start:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light-default","dark":"github-dark-default"}}
claude "/arize-alerts-troubleshoot alerts started firing after we upgraded the cluster"
```

You can also ask in plain language, for example: "Use the arize-alerts-troubleshoot skill to diagnose the alerts currently firing on my cluster."
