NATO: Generative AI in the Defense Sector

Since 2019 NATO Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation has developed a suite of Artificial Intelligence applications as part of the AI FELIX project. The goal of AI FELIX is to enhance information and knowledge management on the NATO classified network and act as a force-multiplier to boost efficiency and effectiveness of NATO personnel. The AI FELIX suite includes four applications that range from automating the processing of incoming correspondence to data-centric decision making for tasking workflows to knowledge assistants. Their latest application, the AI Digital Assistant (AIDA) is a Generative AI / Large Language Model application that taps into NATO’s classified knowledge in order to provide the “right information, at the right time, to the right people.” This session includes sharing lessons learned from NATO’s journey experimenting with Generative AI, how to rapidly bring benefits of Gen AI to deliver value to defense sector users, trust-building with security accreditors, and informing requirements for future military capabilities. This talk was originally delivered at Arize:Observe 2024 at Shack 15 in San Francisco on July 11, 2024.
